Food Lion’s History

Food Lion was founded in 1957 by brothers Ralph and Kenneth Ketner. Inspired by the success of discount grocery stores in Europe, they opened their first store in Salisbury, North Carolina.

The store was an immediate success, and the brothers began expanding their business quickly. By the early 1960s, Food Lion had grown to include more than 100 stores.

Today, it is one of the largest grocery chains in the United States, but despite its large size, Food Lion remains true to its roots as a family-owned business.

Ralph and Kenneth’s descendants still actively participate in the company, and their commitment to providing quality food at low prices continues today.
